Relaciones Culturales en Costa Rica y a Nivel Regional durante
el Período Formativo: Movilidad más allá de la Región

Abstract: The applicability of
the concept of the Istmo-Colombian Region during the Formative
Period is evaluated at the regional level from the perspective
of Costa Rica using not only the usual geographical, linguistic,
and archaeological criteria, but also the distributions of
ritual elements, agricultural practices and social organization.
The existence of environmental diversity would have favored
heterarchical social organization among constituent populations
to facilitate cooperation and reduce risk during periods of
scarcity. Interactions among component communities during this
period set the stage for subsequent cultural development in the

Resumen: La aplicabilidad del concepto de región
Istmo-Colombiana durante el período Formativo es evaluada a
nivel regional desde la perspectiva de Costa Rica utilizando no
sólo criterios geográficos, lingüísticos y arqueológicos; sino
también la distribución de elementos rituales, prácticas
agrícolas y organización social. La existencia de una diversidad
ambiental pudo haber favorecido una organización social de orden
heterárquico entre poblaciones ya consolidadas para facilitar la
cooperación y reducir el riesgo durante períodos de escasez.
Interacciones entre estas comunidades fueron la base de
posteriores y subsecuentes desarrollos culturales en la región.
